Welcome to the IPMS/Golden Spread Modelers!

The Golden Spread Modelers club was formed in the late 1970’s at Half Track Hobbies located on Washington street around the corner from the Esquire Theater (The HRH Building is located in this location now). Tom Pace owned the hobby shop and wanted to start a IPMS chapter in Amarillo.

Some of the first members of the Golden Spread Modelers were: Tom Pace, Rick Pavic, Darrell Cochran, Bill Bacon, Dennis Satterwhite, Jerry Allen and Mike Allen.

The meetings were held at the hobby shop until Tom decided to close the his store. The club went on to meeting at members houses until we found the meeting room at the Amarillo East Branch Library. The meetings were held at the library from 1978 until we moved to Hobby Time in 2006.

The Golden Spread Modelers Shield

The shield of the Golden Spread Models draws upon the history of the group, where we are located and the history of our area.

The shield follows the same shape as the standard USAF Major Command patch.

At the top of the shield is the the Roman numerals, MCMLXXVIII, which translated is 1978. The year the Golden Spread Modelers was formed.

The blue background on the upper part of the shield is for the blue West Texas skies in the Panhandle.

In the center of the shield is a graphic of the Bell-Boeing V-22 Osprey Tiltrotor aircraft. Amarillo was chosen in 1998 as the final assembly and flight test center for the V-22 Osprey, which is a familiar sight in the Panhandle skies.

The lower part of the shield harkens back to the days when Amarillo was home to Amarillo Air Force Base.

The design is from the 461st Bombardment Wing patch which had an alert presence in Amarillo until the base closed in 1968
